The Maras salineras are located in the Sacred Valley of the Incas, an impressive beauty in one of the 4 places in the world where Rosa salt is extracted. They consist of three thousand wells of natural salt, each well measuring 5 square meters. These pools are fed by a hypersaline underground spring that originated 110 million years ago during the formation of the mountains of the Andes cordillera. Currently these pools attract thousands of tourists is a patchwork of red, pink, brown and white tiers that cling to the mountainside. These mountain peoples (inca and pre-inca) have replicated the salt production technique that we have been used to associating with the seashore at 3000 meters above sea level.
If you want to buy a little salt from the stalls you find on the site, they are managed directly by the families that cultivate the salt pans, the most organized tiendas along the road are more expensive.
